What is Scratchboard?
Scratchboard is a hard board covered in ground white kaolin clay and coated with black india ink. Direct etching is done on the surface of the board. A scratch knife or another sharp tool is used to scratch off the ink and reveal the white clay underneath. This process is different from standard drawing since the artist is adding in the highlights. The scratchboard process will yield highly detailed and precise artwork. Inks can also be added for color, this process is multi layered and scratching may be done between layers to add in additional highlights.
